‘Door samenwerking kan binnenkort iedereen kennismaken met onze moderne campus’
Recent is Hesther Bouma in de rol van campuscoördinator van de Energy & Health Campus gestapt. Door het opzetten van verschillende projecten geeft zij vorm aan de doelen en ambities die door de bedrijven in de Ontwikkelvisie zijn opgesteld. ‘Er wordt op de EHC prachtig onderzoek verricht naar duurzame energie en de nucleaire gezondheidszorg. Dat ik met dat soort belangrijke vraagstukken mag werken, geeft me veel voldoening.’
Wat er gebeurt op de campus raakt iedereen
Het leukste vindt Hesther dat ze met verschillende soorten partijen in aanraking komt. Ze is veel aan het netwerken om mensen en projecten aan elkaar te kunnen koppelen en ze is bezig met het opstellen van een jaarplan voor 2024. ‘Volgend jaar willen we vooral goed aan de slag met het delen van het verhaal van de campus aan de buitenwereld.’ Als echte spin in het web vindt ze het gaaf om het bedrijfsleven, de overheid en het onderwijs met elkaar te verbinden. Zo heeft ze een presentatie gegeven op de basisschool in Petten. Deze ging over de EHC en is bedoeld om ook kinderen kennis te laten maken met de technologie van de bedrijven op de campus. ‘Het idee is om ook basisscholen in Schagen te bezoeken en dit verder uit te breiden in Noord-Holland Noord. Wat er gebeurt op de campus raakt iedereen en we vinden het belangrijk om niet alleen dromen en ambities te hebben, maar ook om gelijk te beginnen en iets nieuws te proberen.’
Op een te gekke manier kennis kunnen maken met grensverleggende vraagstukken
Hoewel ze pas is gestart als zelfstandige campuscoördinator, is ze bij het prille begin van de Energy & Health Campus betrokken geweest. In 2016 werkte ze bij Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Noord-Holland Noord en werd er door gemeente Schagen gevraagd of ze voor de Onderzoekslocatie Petten een diepere verbinding tussen de bedrijven onderling en de buitenwereld konden bewerkstelligen. Samen met Baukje de Jong (voormalige campuscoördinator) en experts uit het hele land werkte Hesther toen aan een voorstel om de Energy & Health Campus mogelijk te kunnen maken. Al snel ontstond het “Kernteam” met afgevaardigden van alle bedrijven die vandaag de dag nog met elkaar samenwerken.
Projecten met een lange adem passen goed bij Hesther. Een campus staat er nu eenmaal niet van de een op de andere dag. De lange weg van het Experience Center is een van de mooie voorbeelden van het succes dat je kunt hebben als je stug door blijft gaan. ‘In 2025 opent het Experience Center de deuren en kan de buitenwereld op een te gekke manier kennismaken met grensverleggende vraagstukken van de campusbedrijven, maar ook met het dorp Petten en de natuur daaromheen. Het Experience Center is een van de belangrijkste gedeelde investeringen tussen de bedrijven op de campus en het Hoogheemraadschap en zal als vliegwiel fungeren voor het delen van ons verhaal aan de buitenwereld. Dat vind ik onwijs gaaf, dat alle bedrijven er een steentje aan bijdragen. Met de zekerheid dat de PALLAS-reactor er komt en doordat in december FIELD-LAB wordt geopend, ontstaat er een stevig fundament voor de verdere ontwikkeling van de EHC.’
Hesther heeft zowel een praktijkgerichte als een wetenschappelijke achtergrond. Ze heeft op Hogeschool Inholland Bouwmanagement & Vastgoed gestudeerd en aan de UvA Planologie. Met die combinatie is ze nog altijd erg blij. Verder is ze heel creatief en ontwerpt en maakt ze sieraden. Daarnaast is ze moeder van twee jongens van 5 en 7 jaar en heeft ze naar eigen zeggen een heel leuke partner die ze in de schoolbanken heeft leren kennen.
De EHC voelt als thuiskomen
Omdat Hesther ook vier jaar gewerkt heeft bij gemeente Schagen en projectleider is geweest van de recreatieontwikkelingen van Camping Corfwater en Hotel Huis ter Duin in Petten, voelt het voor haar alsof ze nooit helemaal weg is gegaan. ‘Toen ik wegging bij gemeente Schagen dacht ik nog: deze locatie ga ik wel missen, met alle mooie bedrijven die aan prachtige doelstellingen werken, zo midden in de duinen, aan het strand, in de bollenvelden. Maar Petten is als een magneet: ik kom er altijd weer terug. Bovendien voelt de EHC als een warm bad. Ik word hartelijk ontvangen door de medewerkers en het voelt voor mij absoluut als thuiskomen.’

‘Collaboration will soon allow everyone to experience our modern campus’
Hesther Bouma recently stepped into the role of campus coordinator of the Energy & Health Campus. By setting up various projects, she is shaping the goals and ambitions set out by the companies in the Development Vision. ‘At the EHC, wonderful research is being done on renewable energy and nuclear healthcare. Being able to work with such important subjects gives me great satisfaction.’
What happens on campus affects everyone
What Hesther enjoys most is connecting with different kinds of stakeholders. She is networking a lot to connect people and projects, and she is in the process of preparing an annual plan for 2024. ‘Next year, we especially want to work on sharing the story of the campus with the outside world.’ Being a true facilitator, she thinks it is cool to connect business, government, and education. For example, she gave a presentation at the primary school in Petten. This presentation was about the EHC and aimed to introduce children to the technologies of the companies on the campus. ‘The idea is to also visit primary schools in Schagen and to extend this further in Noord-Holland Noord. What happens on campus touches everyone, and we think it’s important to not only have dreams and ambitions, but also to start right away and try something new.’
Learning about groundbreaking topics in a cool way
Although she recently started as a freelance campus coordinator, she was involved in the very beginning of the Energy & Health Campus. In 2016, she was working at Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Noord-Holland Noord, and they were asked by the municipality of Schagen whether they could establish a greater connection among the companies at the Onderzoekslocatie Petten and with the outside world. Together with Baukje de Jong (former campus coordinator) and experts from across the country, Hesther then worked on a proposal to create an Energy & Health Campus. Soon the “Core Team” was formed, consisting of delegates from the companies that still work together today.
Long-term projects suit Hesther well. After all, a campus is not built overnight. The long road travelled with the Experience Center is one of the fine examples of the success that will follow if you keep going. ‘In 2025, the Experience Center will open its doors, and the outside world will be able to learn in a cool way about the groundbreaking topics the campus companies deal with. They will also learn about the Dutch village of Petten and the nature surrounding it. The Experience Center is one of the key shared investments between the campus companies and the Hoogheemraadschap and will act as a flywheel for sharing our story with the outside world. I think that it’s incredibly cool that all the companies are contributing to this. With the certainty that the PALLAS-reactor is coming and with FIELD-LAB opening in December, there’s a solid foundation for the further development of the EHC.’
Hesther has both a practical and scientific background. She studied Bouwmanagement & Vastgoed (Construction Management & Real Estate) at the Inholland University of Applied Sciences, and she studied Planologie (Planology) at the University of Amsterdam. She is still very happy with that combination. Besides this, Hesther is very creative and designs and makes jewellery. She is also a mother of two boys aged 5 and 7 and says she has a wonderful partner whom she met in school.
The EHC feels like coming home
Because Hesther worked at the municipality of Schagen for four years and was project leader of the recreational developments of Camping Corfwater and Hotel Huis ter Duin in Petten, she feels as if she never quite left. ‘When I left the municipality of Schagen, I thought: I’m going to miss this location, with all the incredible companies working on amazing objectives in the middle of the dunes, on the beach, amidst the bulb fields. But Petten is like a magnet: I always come back. The EHC is as comforting as a warm bath. I’m warmly welcomed by the employees, and to me, it feels like coming home.’
